They’re illuminated by bright red, white and yellow lights that make them appear as though they’re made of fire. Walking through the path on the field will make you feel like a tiny fairy looking up at your magical garden. The walk-through event is made up of several installations coupled with music and special effects, and here are some of the highlights in the order you’ll see them as you walk through Lightscape. With 17 miles of cable powering about a million lights along a mile-long route, things are going to get lit for the holidays at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden.

Downtown LA is simultaneously the hub of the freeway network, road network, commuter rail network, subway / light rail network, and bus network in the region, and thus very easily accessible. The Historic Core lies east of Hill Street and west of Main Street between 3rd and 9th Streets, and was the undisputed center of the city for the first half of the 20th century. Following the white flight to the suburbs after World War II, the district became a vibrant center of Latino culture.

Smorgasburg is much like a food truck event where 30 or so restaurants all have little pop-up shops in this one big industrial area. You can walk all around and try things ranging from fried chicken in a waffle cone, shrimp in a pineapple boat, acai bowls, tea, all sorts of crazy stuff. I recommend bringing your appetite and some money so that you can try a few different things. There’s also a shopping area down the middle that you can check out in between eating. If you are in LA at night, head over to the InterContinental hotel, the tallest building on the West Coast.
Things to Do in Downtown Los Angeles
If you decide to walk, a great place to park is by the Altadena library. The lights stay on until early January, giving you plenty of time to see this unique display. The waterfront properties on the famed Venice Canals get festive for the holiday season. Walk along the canals and cross the many beautiful bridges that span the historic waterways to take in the views of holiday lights. When the Christmas lights start going up around Los Angeles, you know the festive holiday season has arrived! Whether you're celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, or Kwanzaa, there is a timeless joy in taking a spin around the neighborhood to look at the local holiday light displays.
While most others have tended to stay further west, the last couple of years have seen the addition of some hipper hotels catering to younger crowds. Television news footage showed the left side of the red and white bus smashed against the first car of the train. “It’s an immersive light experience where you have technology meeting nature’s beauty in the form of the incredible botanical diversity of this place,” said Richard Schulhof, CEO of the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden. We featured this elaborate home in our Halloween house display round-up as well, but they always pull down the scary and put up the merry when December rolls around.
Seaside Holiday Christmas Lights (aka Candy Cane Lane Torrance) — Seaside Ranchos/Sleepy Hollow, Torrance
Since 1951, each block in this neighborhood has decorated its homes to a theme. The neighborhood is large enough that one evening's drive probably won't catch everything; the pride this neighborhood takes in the collective project merits a visit. Choose a route, and let the oohs and aahs begin; opening night is December 9, 2023, and the displays run nightly, 6pm to 10pm. When we polled our Facebook and Instagram followers for holiday light recommendations, this one was an overwhelming crowd favorite. The Valley's version of Candy Cane Lane can be enjoyed from the comfort of your car, but be prepared for traffic as the holidays draw closer.
Family Vacations
For those visitors coming from within Los Angeles County, local subway and light rail service may be the best option to get to Downtown LA. Five of the six subway and light rail lines in the Metro Rail system terminate in Downtown LA at either Union Station or 7th/Metro Center. The Dresden Restaurant & Lounge has been a family-owned Hollywood landmark and staple since 1954. You can enjoy a piece of classic Hollywood Wednesday-Sunday with our doors opening at 5pm.
The towering trees lining the road get decked out like giant Christmas trees, and the estate homes behind them don't look too shabby either. Torrance's Seaside Ranchos neighborhood has been sending up flares for Santa for more than 40 years, and there's no question he's seen them—as have a whole lot of other admirers. Fans pour through nightly from Thanksgiving weekend until Christmas, and the best way to enjoy the vibe is to park outside the neighborhood and walk. The River Center is at the confluence of several bicycle trails near the River and downtown Los Angeles. From here, you can head to Pershing Square, which is one of the other popular city parks in Los Angeles. There’s not a lot to do in Pershing Square daily, but there is a park for kids to play at, and during Christmas, they have an ice rink here so you can ice skate in the heart of Downtown LA.
Eagle Hills Christmas Lights — Eagle Hills Neighborhood, Brea Hills
My next recommendation is to head down to LA Live, which is right across from the Staple Center and has lots of restaurants as well as the Grammy Museum. If you’re a fan of music, then the Grammy Museum is a great place to explore. It talks about past winners, has instruments that you can play, microphones you can sing into, and revolving exhibits on things like punk rock and famous guitars. Also, along the sidewalk, outside of the museum, there are big records in the ground, much like the stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, that talk about the different artists that won categories during each year of the Grammy’s. Across the street from The Broad, we have the Walt Disney Concert Hall. You’ve probably seen this awesome architectural feat right in the heart of downtown Los Angeles multiple times while driving by.
Metro operates a bike share system, with numerous stations scattered across the Downtown area. Single trips are $3.50 for 30 minutes of use (credit or debit card required), or you can load a monthly pass onto a TAP card for $20 which gives you free rides shorter than 30 minutes and $1.75 for every thirty minutes after that.

The Starcraft 40-passenger bus was traveling westbound on Exposition Boulevard with only the driver and one passenger aboard when the collision occurred, according to a statement from USC Transportation. The bus driver and passenger were the two most severely injured, according to fire department officials. It’s also a soothing departure from the usual parade of over-the-top Christmas-themed decorations around the Holiday season. The grand finale of Lightscape is a pretty grand display of lights and music. Thousands of lights placed on the ground in front of a fountain light up and turn on and off in sync to classical music in a rainbow of colors to form this field of lights. If there was a grand entrance to an enchanted forest it would be this installation.
If you want to see clips of all these spots, check out this video I made talking through them. Stop number one, takes us to The Broad Museum, which is one of the most popular new museums in Los Angeles. This gallery became popular because of its “Instagram-able” attractions like the mirror rooms, the big tulips, the America sign.
This year, the show will light up for the first time on November 24, 2023, at 7pm. This isn't just a few twinkling lights timed to music—this is a 15-song light spectacular set to familiar Christmas tunes by Mariah Carey, Gene Autry, and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (to name a few holiday favorites). Whether you celebrate Hanukkah or Christmas, Overland Avenue has light displays in abundance. The Herman family does their home up with dreidels, Jewish stars, and all things Hanukkah, and surrounding homes also deck their halls with flare. Six houses in a row time their lights to music, making this one of the biggest residential light shows in the state. This isn't one of those neighborhoods with a Facebook page, a special street sign, or even a kitsch name, but if you're on a search for holiday eye candy, this is a sweet spot to check out.
For the customers who were building a new home, a specially trained staff of decorators worked with the home builder and home buyer to create an entire household of beautiful, energy-saving lighting effects that set the standards. If you live closer to Orange County, the Eagle Hills Christmas Lights is a great place to capture some Christmas spirit. This light display, which is located in the neighborhood of Eagle Hills, has been dazzling locals for more than 20 years. As a hillside neighborhood with narrow roads and many cul-de-sacs, traffic can be very rough. If you want to park and walk, park at the Brea Sports Park and walk into the track. Sure, you've heard of the Venice Canals, but the canals at Naples Island are not to be missed in Long Beach dressed up in Christmas lights.
It even has a larger than life size table you can walk right underneath. It’s a free museum, but you do need tickets in advance, and be prepared to wait for about an hour if you don’t get a ticket in advance to get in. The area bounded by 3rd Street, 7th Street, Alameda Street and Main Street is often referred to as "Skid Row" or "the Nickel" and has one of the largest homeless populations in the United States. The Greyhound Station is here, but the area is unsafe for pedestrians regardless of the time of day. The large number of business hotels can be used to your advantage if the timing is right; try for deep discounts on weekend stays.
Houses are alight with trains, reindeer, giant characters, and music—plus frequent appearances by Santa Claus in a covered sleigh at the end of the cul-de-sac. Check out our picks for LA's best holiday light shows and drive-through Christmas lights events, which you'll find in our Guide to Holiday and Christmas Activities for Los Angeles Families. Next stop, we have a Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, a beautiful church that you can check out while you are in the city. This church is stunning with a contemporary design and a large open floor plan. You can walk through the entire area or go down to the mausoleum below the church. If you’re in Los Angeles on a Sunday, the only day of the week that this happens, head over to Smorgasburg.
