The house was built in 1921 to be offices and dressing rooms for Irvin Willat’s film studio in Culver City. In 1926 it was moved to its current location and became a private residence. I drove past the house on my way to an event and immediately turned around in order to check it out. You cannot go beyond the gate but it is truly spectacular to see.
The parking lot got approved but thanks to the work of locals and volunteers the house still remains. Eventually, section two leads to the magnificent carousel room, the piece de resistance that somehow isn’t the end. To exit, you’ll walk through the red-carpeted throat of a demon. House on the Rock is a popular tourist attraction in Wisconsin that draws visitors from all over the world. Just when I begin to think it might never end, I’m out the door and in a Japanese Garden, similar to the one I encountered at the beginning of my visit. The koi pond and 14-foot waterfall are meant to promote relaxation for guests as they leave the house—a palate cleanser to counteract the sensory overload from the hours spent among Jordan’s dizzying displays. A small crowd gathers to watch the figures move to the music, which reverberates loudly throughout the exhibit space.
